The theme for BV Belize primary school teaching session this expedition was conservation and natural resources.\u00a0 We accompanied 25 pupils from the Standard V class at Sarteneja\u2019s RC School to Shipstern Nature Reserve for a tour of the nature reserve given by a Shipstern Park Ranger.\u00a0 The children were taken round the Butterfly Sanctuary and Breeding project and on a \u201cjungle tour\u201d through the semi-tropical and deciduous forest that makes up the reserve.\u00a0 The Ranger told the children about the trees and plants found along the trail and their medicinal and commercial uses, as well as describing the threat to Belize\u2019s forests through illegal logging.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1088\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2011\/03\/02\/bv-belize-primary-school-teaching-in-sarteneja\/o-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1088\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1088\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1088 lazyload\" title=\"O\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/RC-school-385x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"288\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 385px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 385\/288;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers and Field Staff follow up with classroom session<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Blue Ventures staff and volunteers then followed this up with a classroom session based on the visit to the reserve. We focussed on butterflies and their natural habitats and the impact of habitat loss on different species.
