It happens to be another windy day in Belize.\u00a0 This usually means that it will be a \u201cPlan B\u201d day; we won\u2019t be doing much in the way of diving.\u00a0 But no worries, there is another, even more fascinating world, to explore.\u00a0 We will venture out to explore the Mangroves.<\/p>\n<p>The Mangroves around Bacalar Chico are teaming with an outrageous assortment of life.\u00a0 It is literally a fish stew, with rays, tarpons, turtles, crocks and schools of fish competing for their niches.\u00a0 Manatees mow the sea grass lawns and, birds watch for unsuspecting prey from the skies.\u00a0 All these creatures, large and small, call the Mangroves home.<\/p>\n<p>Our famous Captain Samos spotted some manatees in a mangrove channel.\u00a0 We snorkelled with these gentle giants.\u00a0 They would check us out as they silently glided around us. \u00a0\u00a0I was mesmerized, as I watched their huge rounded tails effortlessly pulse through the deep green waters.\u00a0 One turned to approach me, looking directly into my eyes.\u00a0 We exchanged glances, before he slipped back into his sea grass world.\u00a0 This was such an awesome experience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2011\/03\/24\/the-mangroves\/dan-blob\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1135\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1135 lazyload\" title=\"dan blob\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/dan-blob-385x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"288\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 385px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 385\/288;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bird watching has also become a highlight for me.\u00a0 These mangrove forests are a Mecca for birds.\u00a0 There are big birds, tiny birds, fat birds, skinny birds, long legged birds and short legged birds and birds with happy faces.\u00a0 We sat silently doing a bird survey in Crock lagoon.\u00a0 Tarpon splashed, snook schooled, and bait fish rippled on the surface.\u00a0 A couple crocks plied the waters, as ospreys, herons and pelicans patrolled the skies.\u00a0 We slowly motored through the dark, narrow channels, with a green canopy overhead.\u00a0 We listened in silence to the cries of birds, and the splash of fish, as the sun ushered in a new day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2011\/03\/24\/the-mangroves\/p1030418\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1122\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1122 lazyload\" title=\"P1030418\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/P1030418-385x288.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"288\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 385px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 385\/288;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After a day of snorkelling with manatees, exploring sinkholes teaming with fish, and watching birds, I retire to my hammock suspended between two palm trees.\u00a0 As the inky night unveils the Milky Way, I lounge in my hammock, looking at the stars through the rustling palms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Dan Purnell, BV Belize Volunteer, Sarteneja, Belize.
