{"id":119,"date":"2006-12-04T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-04T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blueventures.org\/blog\/?p=119"},"modified":"2006-12-04T12:30:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-04T11:30:00","slug":"a-tail-of-17-wrasses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/en\/a-tail-of-17-wrasses\/","title":{"rendered":"A tail of 17 wrasses&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <span style=\"font-size:85%;\">Learning to identify the 150 fish species we monitor on the reefs is quite a challenge, and as part of their training volunteers each have to prepare a fish presentation for the group on one of the many families. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">A tail of 17 wrasses (in the order they appear in Collins)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">According to Collins wrasses are diverse in size and form<br \/>So unfortunately there is no wrasse norm<br \/>First up is the lyre-tailed hog<br \/>Half of it&#8217;s white, so think of it as if caught in a very small fog<br \/>The only other hog is known as the axil-spot<br \/>This is because three black spots it has got<br \/>Next up is the hump head wrasse<br \/>Rumour has it the hump was caused by a nasty incident with a bass<br \/>The reason I failed a test is a wrasse called sling-jaw<br \/>It looks nothing like what was in Collins and it might as well have had a paw!<br \/>The yellow-tail and white spotted wrasses you could easily confuse<br \/>Remember that the yellowtail has spots in blue hues <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_2sC8zyeHSQw\/RXQI776yz2I\/AAAAAAAAAAM\/vZnujl-E9NA\/s1600-h\/Anampses_meleagrides_(Yellowtail_Wrasse).jpg\"><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-size:85%;\">Then there&#8217;s a wrasse that is called the yellow breast<br \/>Purely between you and me it\u00eds not in the computer test<br \/>I realised I&#8217;d left the triple tail wrasse out at the very last minute<br \/>So this poem has nothing about it in it. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bp3.blogger.com\/_2sC8zyeHSQw\/RXQJL76yz3I\/AAAAAAAAAAU\/Bwfq9N7zEQQ\/s1600-h\/Halichoeres_hortulanus_(Checkerboard_Wrasse).jpg\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><br \/>The checkerboard wrasse is easy and it lives up to its name<br \/>You could lay it on a table, and have a little game<br \/>The zigzag wrasse has a black wavy line in the middle<br \/>It looks like it was finished then someone had another fiddle<br \/>The barred thick lip wrasse is a bit of a weird catch<br \/>It&#8217;s coloured head and black-and-white body don&#8217;t match<br \/>Wrasses called Indian Ocean bird look a bit like mice<br \/>If you show one to Max, deep down he might say they look \u00ebniiice\u00ed<br \/>Easy to know is the gold bar wrasse<br \/>Just look at the base of its head and think lots of cash<br \/>The crescent wrasse has a colourful head but most of it&#8217;s green<br \/>I got it confused with a parrot but realised it looks a lot less mean<br \/>The six bar wrasse has six black bars<br \/>Another distinguishing feature is its red striped head<br \/>The cleaner wrasses look similar but you can be quite mellow<br \/>Just by remembering that the bicoloured one&#8217;s tail is yellow<br \/>The blue streak cleaner you&#8217;ll be pleased to know is the seventeenth wrasse<br \/>Good luck to everybody, I hope you&#8217;ll pass<br \/>Just one more bit of wrasse-related knowledge<br \/>Wrasses in the rear-view mirror may appear smaller than in Collins<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bp0.blogger.com\/_2sC8zyeHSQw\/RXQJyL6yz4I\/AAAAAAAAAAc\/V6pjXe2eEl0\/s1600-h\/Thalassoma_hardwicke_(Sixbar_Wrasse)_%5Bmale%5D.jpg\"><span style=\"font-size:85%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5004635843712962434\" style=\"FLOAT: right;
