{"id":372,"date":"2009-05-08T11:43:54","date_gmt":"2009-05-08T10:43:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bvblog.wpengine.com\/?p=372"},"modified":"2014-04-23T12:44:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T11:44:34","slug":"first-impressions-of-tioman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/en\/first-impressions-of-tioman\/","title":{"rendered":"First impressions of Tioman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> After\u00a0three jam packed days in\u00a0KL, a four and a half hour bus journey with a crazy driver and a late ferry, we arrived on Tioman. I loved it immediately. The small island chilled out way of life hits you as soon as you arrive.<br \/>\nOur long house rooms sit about 20m off of the shore with great views of the horizon, surrounding islands and amazing sunsets.<\/p>\n<p>We were given the next day to chill out then it was straight in to the diving and a big task of making a reef clean up video, which was entertaining to say the least, as many of the group hadn&#8217;t dived for a while.\u00a0The purpose of the video\u00a0is\u00a0to instruct volunteer divers on the removal of Crown of Thorns, these are big starfish which destroy the coral and have no natural predators here so need to be removed. Luckily one of the other volunteers is a video editor so we have a pretty good\u00a0final copy.\u00a0The\u00a0reef clean up weekend,\u00a0is happening in May and should be fun.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been here for just over a week now and we&#8217;ve dived\u00a0two to three dives a day, the dive sites are some of the best sites\u00a0I&#8217;ve dived. I&#8217;ve seen so much already from\u00a0sharks to\u00a0turtles to massive moray eels, right down to the tiniest crabs and nudibranchs.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve also learnt so much about corals and fish species in the lectures from Katie the expedition manager, she really knows her stuff.<br \/>\nThe food here at Swiss Cottage\u00a0is lovely, traditional Malaysian dishes, made with fresh ingredients. We\u00a0have eaten out\u00a0a couple of times, once at a chinese restaurant in the village and once at a beach front pizzeria both amazing.<\/p>\n<p>We are\u00a0planning a four day\u00a0trek to Juara\u00a0next weekend, which is over the other side of the island through the rain forest. We are going\u00a0over there to check out some reefs for monitoring and to visit a turtle santuary.
