Volunteers get muddy spending\u00a0a couple of days helping\u00a0in the construction\u00a0of a\u00a0new sea cucumber pen\u00a0for the\u00a0students in Tampolove, a small village in the South of Velondriake. Once the delivery of juveniles arrives on the 23rd of September it will take 11 months\u00a0for the\u00a0Sea cucumbers to\u00a0grow\u00a0large enough to be sold\u00a0on the\u00a0lucrative b\u00e9che-de-mer market.\u00a0With one Sea cucumber\u00a0able to\u00a0pay for\u00a0a\u00a0student&#8217;s term fees, there is great\u00a0potential\u00a0for this project to drastically\u00a0change their lives.\u00a0\u00a0Other than school fees the\u00a0students want to use the revenue\u00a0earned\u00a0to pay for medical evacuation and health care, as well as desperately needed school equipment.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2010\/09\/24\/team-zanga-sea-cucumber-in-gasy-waded-out-during-low-tide-in-search-of-the-illusive-sea-cucumbers\/olympus-digital-camera-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-820\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-820 lazyload\" title=\"Setting up sea cucumber pens\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/P1010275-sml3-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/224;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe volunteers relax\u00a0with a\u00a0game of volleyball\u00a0on half-moon beach after spending the previous night\u00a0living\u00a0with the Sea cucumber farmers in Tampolove.\u00a0Their\u00a0night was not filled with much sleep though. This\u00a0was neither\u00a0due to the bellow of the geckos,\u00a0nor the early\u00a0start to\u00a0village life, but instead\u00a0due to the need for them to help complete\u00a0the monthly monitoring mission to count\u00a0and weigh all the\u00a0sea cucumbers in\u00a0each farmer&#8217;s pen.\u00a0With guidance from the star-coverd\u00a0night,\u00a0Team Zanga (Sea cucumber in Gasy) waded out during low tide\u00a0in search of the\u00a0illusive sea cucumbers\u00a0that it is hoped still reside within the pens. Although the farming stock of\u00a0Sea cucumbers has been greatly depleted due to\u00a0unforseen\u00a0issues, the sheer numbers, as well as the enthusiasm, from Team Zanga meant that we were able to locate over 1500 specimens, with\u00a0potentially\u00a0100\u00a0being larger\u00a0than the minimum market\u00a0size of\u00a0300 g.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Matt Hitchiner.
