Mangrove forests are also popular fishing areas for many\u00a0local villages, and, without proper management, can become over\u00a0harvested.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2010\/10\/08\/earlier-this-week-the-two-mangrove-reserves-opened-again-to-legal-harvest\/mangrove-1-small\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-839\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-839 lazyload\" title=\"Mangrove\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/Mangrove-1-small-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/198;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In order to protect these important ecological functions and\u00a0prevent exploitation, two villages in southern Velondriake declared a\u00a0section of their forests temporary reserves in early July, to be closed\u00a0for three months. Earlier this week, the two reserves opened again to\u00a0legal harvest. After a ritual blessing from the ancestors conducted by\u00a0a village elder, community members fished using nets and spears. Blue\u00a0Ventures staff and Velondriake members were on hand to measure and\u00a0record fish catches.
