{"id":845,"date":"2010-10-13T15:54:39","date_gmt":"2010-10-13T14:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bvblog.wpengine.com\/?p=845"},"modified":"2023-08-23T12:10:40","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T11:10:40","slug":"in-praise-of-the-situation-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/en\/in-praise-of-the-situation-report\/","title":{"rendered":"In praise of the situation report!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Kathleen Edie, Volunteer &amp; Expedition Coordinator<em>.\u00a0 <\/em>Some will lament, others will cheer that the village of Andavadoaka has joined the digital age.\u00a0 It seems that after 7 long years of twice weekly satellite phone exchanges, the much maligned and mostly loved situation report \u2018sitrep\u2019 will disappear, and the interweb will be at our fingertips.<\/p>\n<p>For those who have not been fortunate enough to be isolated from the online world in the Blue Ventures field site bubble, you will now never know the anticipation of\u00a0 words from loved ones or instructions \u2018from London\u2019 arriving on Tuesday and Friday mornings.\u00a0 The construction of a very tall, very red, solar powered spire will spell the end of the \u2018situation report\u2019, the email package sent between London and Andavadoaka with news and greetings, words of encouragement and debate, conversations which take weeks, important data and those \u2018quick\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/2010\/10\/13\/in-praise-of-the-situation-report\/andava-aout-10-298-sml\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-847\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-847 lazyload\" title=\"Andavadoaka's shiny new pylon\" data-src=\"http:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/media\/Andava-Aout-10-298-sml-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I first started with Blue Ventures it was soon apparent that the regular sitreps were of grave importance.\u00a0 They were fiddly to put together; all exporting, collating, reducing file sizes, adhering to vaguely similar naming conventions and, should something go wrong, the source of great consternation!\u00a0 After time, they represented a deadline to be met, hurried last minute emails giving up-to-date information, or getting in that question which would take another week to answer if it wasn\u2019t asked that minute.\u00a0 But I have always looked forward to receiving the sitrep, hearing what is happening on site, getting some vital bit of information, enjoying the experiences that volunteers write about in their blogs and getting to know my colleagues before ever meeting them in person.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can ask a question and it will be answered, I\u2019ll get facebook updates and not word docs, the photos will come in all the time, not just once every couple of months \u2013 but will it all be a little less exciting?<\/p>\n<p>Although many a parent and partner will be pleased to hear from their intrepid loved-one more than once a week and the working lives of the staff team, in both London and Madagascar, will be much easier than before, I can\u2019t help feeling a little sad that the wonderful cyber-peace of Andavadoaka will be broken.\u00a0 At least there is a beautiful beach or two on hand to escape to\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Kathleen Edie, Volunteer &amp; Expedition Coordinator.\u00a0 Some will lament, others will cheer that the village of Andavadoaka has joined the digital age.\u00a0 It seems that after 7 long years of twice weekly satellite phone exchanges, the much maligned and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":73,"featured_media":28415,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[43],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-845","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-velondriake-madagascar"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>In praise of the situation report!
