{"id":8937,"date":"2017-08-31T17:40:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-31T16:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/?p=8937"},"modified":"2021-06-18T14:59:22","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T13:59:22","slug":"whale-time-timor-leste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/en\/whale-time-timor-leste\/","title":{"rendered":"Having a whale of a time in Timor-Leste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was one of nine volunteers on Blue Ventures\u2019 11th Expedition in Timor-Leste, and my initial concern when signing up was the other volunteers that I would be joining. Going to the opposite side of the world with a group of people I\u2019d never met before was a bit of a frightening prospect&#8230; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, I figured that if they were curious enough about the world to visit Timor-Leste, we must have something in common. And boy was I right! They are some of the kindest and most thoughtful people that I\u2019ve ever met and that I\u2019m now proud to call my friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only this, but Blue Ventures\u2019 Field Scientist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blueventures.org\/team\/jenny-house\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Dive Manager, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blueventures.org\/team\/laura-mcguire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura McGuire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are two people I would be happy to spend any amount of time on an island with. The Timorese staff members, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blueventures.org\/team\/amos-da-costa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blueventures.org\/team\/jemima-gomes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mima<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blueventures.org\/team\/antonio-de-arujo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antonio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Armino, also did a great job helping us volunteers acclimatise to the culture, teaching us a bit of Tetun and taking care of us on our dives.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-carousel-extra='{\"blog_id\":1,\"permalink\":\"https:\\\/\\\/blog.blueventures.org\\\/en\\\/whale-time-timor-leste\\\/\"}' class=\"tiled-gallery type-rectangular\" data-original-width=\"900\"><div class=\"gallery-row\" style=\"width: 895px; Waking up, essentially on the beach, scuba diving, learning more about marine biology and Timorese culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout my six weeks on Ata\u00faro Island, every dive was special in one way or another (even when just being the \u2018body\u2019 in a Rescue Diver course). That being said, there were two mornings that carried just a little more weight than the rest, so I\u2019m going to describe them to you now in more detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>Friday July 7, 2017<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>6:30<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I wake up and have coffee and egg sandwiches with my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/warm-welcome-atauro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homestay family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0I walk to Barry\u2019s Place, where everyone set ups their tanks and dive gear in the \u201ckit pit\u201d as Jenny picks up takeaway lunches for us all from Leno\u2019s (a local restaurant).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> All aboard \u201cTasi Mos\u201d (our dive boat), and full speed ahead to Akrema village on the north of Ata\u00faro. There are no expansive coral shelfs, or steep walls like at the reefs we\u2019ve surveyed around Beloi village, but there is a strong current and we start drifting along the bottom at a depth of 17 metres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:40<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Woah! A 2 metre (or so) Napoleon Wrasse appears in the distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:50<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Double woah! A 2 or 3 metre shark is approaching. It swims by before then circling back, it must be curious. On the second pass I got a really good look at it, the biggest shark I\u2019ve ever seen, and I\u2019m amazed at how calm I stayed. At first, and throughout the dive, I thought it was a reef shark\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Out of the blue approaches a large school of barracuda. As quickly as they arrive, they are gone. What will appear next?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:10<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Shark number 2! This one was further in the distance, so I didn\u2019t get as good as look, but my fellow volunteer Chiara identified it as a black tip reef shark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Interjection from Jenny:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some members of the group saw a third shark on this dive! Definitely the most exciting megafauna of the expedition so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:30<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Back on board Tasi Mos, Laura speculates that the first shark was a bull shark! Enthusiasm on the boat is sky high as we head for exploratory dive site number 2 near the village of Vatu on the west of Ata\u00faro.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:40<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On arrival, Jenny and Mima swim to shore to confirm our eligibility to dive here. The community of Vatu have designated the area as a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/talking-tara-bandu-witnessing-marine-milestone-atauro\/\">tara bandu<\/a>, a community law for the regulation of the use of natural resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:41<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While we wait we practice our backflips off Tasi Mos!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jenny and Mima return to the boat. Although the designation process is still ongoing, we are able to make a donation to support the community\u2019s conservation efforts, and we have permission to be the first \u201ctourists\u201d to dive here since it was set aside for conservation 4 months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10:20<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Down we go! There\u2019s slightly more coral here, and the water has slightly better visibility. We\u2019ve found Butterfly World!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10:59<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I spot an unidentified colonising object on a rock below. It\u2019s black in color, has holes which resemble a tunicate, but is dripping (as melted cheese would) from one rock to another. We\u2019re going whale watching! Earlier in the week we had a lecture from Professor Karen Edyvane from Charles Darwin University about her research on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.blueventures.org\/cetacean-migration-whales-dolphins-arrived\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetaceans in Timor-Leste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we were all buzzing to go and see some for ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:00<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tasi Mos leaves the shelter of the inner lagoon, heading towards the open ocean where chances of seeing cetaceans are higher. The sun is shining, the sea is mostly calm, and everyone\u2019s eyes are glued to the horizon, scanning for any signs of mammalian activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:30<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No sightings yet&#8230; We\u2019re on the opposite side of the island, and Jenny is thinking it\u2019s time to start heading for home. She asks Antonio if it\u2019s time to turn around but he suggests we do a lap of the Island, seeing as we have the fuel. This is a subspecies of the blue whale which only grows to 24 metres rather than 28 metres long.
